For mild to moderate crowding, gaps, or teeth that have drifted after braces years ago, clear aligners and braces give comparable results, and the choice comes down to how visible you want treatment to be, how disciplined you are about wearing something removable, and your budget. For large movements, rotations and bites where the jaws themselves are misaligned, braces remain the more predictable option. How each one works
Braces are brackets bonded to each tooth, joined by a wire. The dentist tightens or changes the wire every four weeks or so, and the constant, gentle force moves the teeth. Metal braces are the classic version; ceramic braces use tooth-coloured brackets that are less noticeable.
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent plastic trays made from a digital scan of your teeth. Each tray is slightly different from the last and moves the teeth a fraction of a millimetre. You wear each for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat and brush. Small tooth-coloured attachments are bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip. Invisalign is the original system; Indian brands such as Toothsi are made locally and cost less.
Both work on the same principle: steady pressure on a tooth remodels the bone around it, and the tooth moves.
Where aligners have the edge
- Appearance. From a normal speaking distance most people will not notice them. For adults in client-facing jobs this is usually the deciding factor.
- Eating and cleaning. Take the trays out, eat what you like, brush and floss as normal. No food restrictions, no food traps around brackets.
- Comfort. No wires or brackets, so no cuts on the cheeks and lips. Each new tray brings two or three days of pressure, then settles.
- Fewer, shorter visits. Check-ups every six to eight weeks, about 15 minutes each. Convenient if you cannot take time off work.
- A preview. Before you commit, you see a 3D simulation of the result and know the number of trays and the cost.
Where braces have the edge
- Complex cases. Big rotations, teeth that need to move a long way, deep bites, crossbites and cases with jaw discrepancies are more predictable with braces. Aligners struggle to rotate round-shaped teeth such as canines and premolars.
- No discipline required. Braces work 24 hours a day whether you remember them or not. Aligners work only when they are in your mouth. If you know you will forget trays, leave them in a tissue at lunch or give yourself weekends off, braces will finish sooner and more reliably.
- Cost. Metal braces are roughly half the price of the cheapest aligners.
- Teenagers. Braces are often the safer choice for teenagers, mostly for the discipline reason above, though motivated teens do well with aligners.

Indian aligner brands cost ₹65,000 to ₹1,20,000 depending on the number of trays, and Invisalign ₹1,60,000 to ₹3,50,000 depending on whether it is a Lite, Moderate or Comprehensive package. A good package includes the digital scan and simulation, all the trays, refinement trays if some teeth need extra movement, review visits and retainers. Check that refinements are included; some clinics charge separately, and they are needed in a fair share of cases.
What changes either price
The number of teeth being moved (one arch or both), how far they need to go, and whether cavities or gum problems need treating first. EMI is widely available for both options, so the monthly figure may matter more to you than the headline number.
Time and visits
Treatment time depends on the case, not the method. Slight crowding of the lower front teeth can finish in four to six months with either. Moderate cases take nine to twelve months, complex ones 18 months or more. Braces need a visit every four weeks; aligners every six to eight weeks. Over a year that is roughly 12 visits against 7.
Comfort and daily life
Braces ache for a few days after each adjustment and can rub the cheeks until the mouth toughens up. Hard, sticky and crunchy foods are off the menu, and cleaning around brackets takes patience. Aligners bring milder pressure with each new tray, a slight lisp for the first day or two, and the constant small chore of taking them out, rinsing and putting them back. Which of those you would find more annoying is a fair basis for choosing.
Which one for you
Aligners are probably right if you have mild to moderate crowding or spacing, want treatment to be discreet, can commit to 20 to 22 hours of wear a day, and the budget allows.
Braces are probably right if your case is complex, you are a teenager or know you will not be disciplined with removable trays, or you want the lowest cost.
Some cases do well with a short course of braces to handle the difficult movements, followed by aligners for finishing. A dentist who offers both can plan that honestly; one who offers only one option has a reason to steer you towards it.
After treatment, both need retainers
Whatever moved your teeth, they will drift back without retainers. Expect full-time wear for a few months, then nights only, indefinitely. Retainers are usually included in the treatment price; confirm this before you start.
