Who teeth whitening suits

A good fit if you have

  • Yellow or brown staining from tea, coffee, wine, paan or tobacco
  • Teeth that have darkened gradually with age
  • A wedding, interview or photoshoot coming up
  • Healthy teeth and gums with no untreated cavities
  • Adults and older teenagers with all permanent teeth
  • Anyone whose whitening toothpaste and strips have made no difference

We may suggest something else if

  • Grey or banded stains from tetracycline or fluorosis, where veneers work better
  • Crowns, veneers or large fillings on the front teeth, which do not change colour
  • Untreated cavities, cracked teeth or gum disease, which are fixed first
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, as a precaution

How it works

Teeth Whitening at i-Smile, step by step

  1. 1

    Examination and shade record

We check for cavities, cracks and gum health, note your starting shade with a shade guide and a photo, and confirm whitening will work on your type of stain.

  2. 2

    Cleaning

Plaque and surface stains are removed with scaling and polishing so the gel reaches the enamel evenly. Included in the in-clinic price.

  3. 3

    Gum protection

A rubber barrier is painted over the gums and cured, and lips and cheeks are retracted so only the teeth are treated.

  4. 4

    Gel application

A high-strength peroxide gel goes on the front teeth for three or four cycles of 15 minutes. An LED light may be used to activate it.

  5. 5

    Rinse and compare

The gel and barrier come off, teeth are rinsed, and the new shade is checked against the starting photo. Most people gain two to six shades.

  6. 6

    Aftercare

You leave with a desensitising gel, a list of foods to avoid for 48 hours, and optional take-home trays to top up the result.

How whitening actually works

Stains from food, drink and tobacco do not just sit on the surface; over the years they soak into the microscopic structure of enamel. Whitening gels contain hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which releases oxygen molecules that break these stain molecules into smaller, colourless pieces. The enamel is not bleached away or coated; the colour trapped inside it is dismantled.

This is why professional whitening changes the shade of the tooth while whitening toothpaste only polishes the surface. It is also why whitening does nothing to crowns, veneers or fillings, which have no stain to dismantle.

In-clinic or take-home?

In-clinic whitening uses a stronger gel with the gums protected, so it can do in 90 minutes what a home kit does over two weeks. It suits people who want a result before an event, or who would rather not manage trays at home.

Take-home whitening uses trays moulded to your teeth and a milder gel worn for an hour or overnight for 10 to 14 days. The result is slightly gentler on sensitive teeth, and the trays remain useful for years as a touch-up tool.

Many patients do both: in-clinic for the jump, trays to hold the shade. Both are priced on the cost table above.

What the visit feels like

After the cleaning, a cheek retractor keeps your lips out of the way and the gum barrier is applied; it feels like a thin plastic film. The gel is painted on and you relax for 15 minutes at a time, watching something on your phone. Between cycles the gel is suctioned off and reapplied. Some people feel a few brief cold zings; most feel nothing. The whole visit is under an hour and a half, and you see the difference in the mirror before you leave.

Why patients choose i-Smile for whitening

  • Examination first. Cavities, cracks and gum inflammation are found and treated before whitening, so there are no surprises and no unnecessary sensitivity.
  • Cleaning included. Scaling and polishing are part of the in-clinic price, not an add-on.
  • Honest expectations. If your stain type will not respond, or if a single dark tooth needs a different approach, you will be told at the consultation.
  • Desensitising as standard, before and after, for comfortable treatment.
  • Evening slots so you can whiten after work without taking leave.

Keeping teeth white

For 48 hours after treatment, stick to pale foods and drinks: milk, curd, rice, chicken, white bread, water. After that, rinse with water after tea or coffee, avoid tobacco and paan, and brush twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste. A six-monthly cleaning removes the surface stain that builds between sessions. Use your take-home trays for a night or two whenever the shade drifts.

What changes the price

  • In-clinic or take-home, or both together.
  • Number of sessions. Heavily stained teeth occasionally need a second in-clinic session.
  • Preparatory work, such as fillings or gum treatment, quoted separately.
  • Internal bleaching of a single root-canal-treated tooth is priced on its own.

Questions patients ask

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How much does teeth whitening cost in Ghatkopar, Mumbai?
At i-Smile, in-clinic whitening costs ₹10,000 to ₹18,000 and includes the scaling and polishing beforehand. A take-home kit with custom-fitted trays and gel costs ₹6,000 to ₹9,000. Combining both, in-clinic first and trays for touch-ups, gives the longest-lasting result.
Is teeth whitening safe for enamel?
Yes, when done under a dentist's supervision. Peroxide gels used in clinics have been studied for decades and do not soften or thin enamel. The risks come from unsupervised use of very strong gels, from whitening over untreated cavities, and from abrasive home remedies such as charcoal or baking soda, which do scratch enamel.
Does whitening hurt?
Some people feel brief zings of cold sensitivity during or after treatment, which settle within a day or two. We use a desensitising gel before and after, and you can take a mild painkiller if needed. Patients with sensitive teeth are often better suited to take-home trays at a gentler strength.
How long does whitening last?
Typically one to three years, depending on your habits. Tea, coffee, red wine, paan and smoking shorten it. A take-home tray used for one or two nights every few months keeps the shade where you want it.
Can I drink tea and coffee after whitening?
Avoid strongly coloured food and drink for 48 hours after treatment, when the enamel is most porous. After that, moderate amounts are fine. Drinking through a straw and rinsing with water afterwards helps.
Why do my teeth look yellow even though I brush well?
Enamel is naturally slightly translucent, and the dentine beneath it is yellow. As enamel thins with age, more dentine colour shows through. Brushing removes surface plaque and stain but cannot change the colour inside the tooth; only peroxide whitening does that.
Do whitening toothpastes and charcoal work?
Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains through mild abrasion and can make teeth look slightly brighter, but they do not change the shade of the enamel itself. Charcoal, baking soda and lemon do more harm than good; they abrade or erode enamel, which eventually makes teeth look darker.
My front tooth is darker than the others. Will whitening fix it?
If a single tooth has darkened after an injury or a root canal, ordinary whitening may not even it out. That tooth can be whitened from the inside in a procedure called internal bleaching, or covered with a veneer. We assess it first, so book a consultation rather than a whitening session.
How soon before my wedding should I whiten?
Two to three weeks before. That gives the shade time to settle, sensitivity to pass, and room for a second session or a few nights of tray whitening if you want to go lighter. Any veneers or bonding should be done after the shade has settled.
Which dentist in Ghatkopar does teeth whitening?
Dr. Upasana Gosalia at i-Smile Dental Clinic, Rajawadi Signal, Ghatkopar East, offers in-clinic and take-home whitening after a full examination, so stains that need a different treatment are caught before you pay for whitening. The clinic is open until 9 pm, Monday to Saturday.
