What a cleaning at i-Smile includes
A professional cleaning does three things brushing cannot. It removes tartar, the hard, chalky deposit that forms when plaque sits on the teeth for more than a day or two and which no toothbrush can shift. It removes surface stains from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan. And it lets us look closely at every tooth and gum margin while we work, which is how most small cavities and early gum problems get spotted.
The visit starts with a check-up. If your gums are healthy or only mildly inflamed, we go straight to cleaning. If the probe finds pockets deeper than 3 or 4 mm and the X-ray shows bone loss, a routine cleaning will not reach the problem. We explain the difference and plan a deep cleaning instead.
The cleaning itself uses an ultrasonic scaler, a fine tip that vibrates at high frequency under a spray of water and breaks tartar off the enamel without cutting it. Hand instruments follow up in tight spots. Polishing with a rubber cup and fine paste removes stains and leaves the surface smooth. If you choose the fluoride option, a varnish is painted on at the end to strengthen the enamel and calm sensitivity.
What teeth cleaning actually feels like
Most people describe the ultrasonic scaler as a tickling vibration with a lot of water. It is noisy rather than painful. Where tartar sits below the gum line or the gums are inflamed, you may feel a sharp twinge for a second, and there may be a little bleeding, which stops on its own. Local anaesthesia is very rarely needed for a routine cleaning; if you are particularly sensitive, tell us and we can apply a numbing gel.
Polishing feels like a gentle electric toothbrush with gritty toothpaste. The whole appointment is over in 30 to 45 minutes, and you can eat straight afterwards. If fluoride varnish has been applied, we ask you to avoid hot drinks and brushing for about four hours so it has time to work.
For a day or two your teeth may feel more sensitive to cold. This is because tartar and swollen gum were covering parts of the tooth that are now exposed. It settles as the gum tightens back up.

Between cleanings: keeping tartar away
Tartar forms fastest behind the lower front teeth and on the cheek side of the upper back molars, near the openings of the salivary glands. These are the places to spend a few extra seconds each day.
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft brush, angled towards the gum line.
- Clean between the teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes.
- Rinse with water after tea, coffee or anything sugary if you cannot brush.
- If you use tobacco or paan, cleanings every three to four months rather than six will keep staining and gum problems in check.
- Do not skip the cleaning because your teeth feel fine. Tartar below the gum line does not hurt until it has done damage.
What changes the price
- Cleaning alone or with fluoride. Scaling and polishing costs ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. Adding a fluoride application takes it to ₹2,500 to ₹3,500, worth it if you have sensitive teeth or get cavities easily.
- Amount of tartar. Heavy, long-standing deposits take longer to remove and may need a second short visit, which is why the range exists.
- Deep cleaning is a different procedure. If pockets and bone loss are found, the treatment is scaling and root planing at ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 for the full mouth, and we will explain why before doing anything.
- Consultation fee. The ₹350 examination fee is adjusted against the cleaning on the same visit.
